Berlusconi:
Condemned To Win

Director— Sam Blair
Executive Producer— James Gay-Rees
Production Company— Box To Box
Primary Broadcaster— ESPN

ESPN’s 30 for 30 strand has become a leader in pushing at the boundaries of the sports documentary format, and this three part miniseries from Box to Box is no exception – combining the stories of the meteoric rise through the 80s and 90s of a once stagnating AC Milan football team, with the murky evolution, from business man to club owner and media mogul, of Silvio Berlusconi – one of politics’s most divisive and shadowy figures – and arguably the key proponent in shaping the Trump playbook and contemporary right wing political discourse.

The challenge for the GFX brief was to match the bombast and overstatement of this larger-than-life antagonist, whilst capturing the mood of the emerging TV-based news of the era – with a typographic palette inspired by the volume and visual noise of the newly privatised Italian media.

Deliverables ranged from animated titles to sports infographics, story beat ‘translation’ cards, maps and newspaper treatments.
